VERVIEW: Second-generation Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) significantly improved low-light performance over first-generation devices, enabling more effective operations during night or low-visibility conditions. They became standard for military ground, air, and special forces from the 1980s onward.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Gen 2 NVGs use a microchannel plate (MCP) to amplify the image, dramatically increasing brightness and resolution in near-total darkness. Unlike Gen 1 devices, they offer better clarity, reduced distortion, and faster light adaptation. These goggles are typically helmet-mounted or handheld, supporting dismounted infantry, pilots, or vehicle crews with hands-free night-time situational awareness. They are sensitive to near-infrared (NIR) light and often used with IR illuminators for close-range clarity in total darkness.

ROLE SUMMARY:
Category: Night Vision / Optical Surveillance
Primary Use: Passive visual detection and navigation in low-light conditions
Function: Image intensification (passive, light amplification)
Platform: Infantry, SOF, pilots, and vehicle crews
Integration: May be used with IR laser aiming modules or helmet-mounted systems
